Keeping our bodies moving throughout our lives strengthens muscles, which improves stability, balance, and coordination, it helps build more durable, denser bones and is key to our mental health as it releases endorphins, natural cannabis-like brain chemicals also known as feel good hormones. Not only do they enhance your sense of well-being but regular exercise may help ease depression and anxiety. Stretching also helps maintain your muscle health as well. So any form of movement or exercise helps whether its low or high impact.
I love exercise for these very reasons. There is no down side to exercise. It only does good to your body and it may sound cliched but you don't feel bad after you have done it. There are only positive feelings. I also know what good it is doing in my body and how performing some sort of movement is beneficial for my future.
Of course not everyone loves exercise and I get it but maybe let's not look at exercise as a punishment or something you HAVE to do. Look at it as part of your way of life. You walk to your car, you walk up the stairs, you walk to the shops. It all helps but as well as your everyday movement if you can add in at least 30 mins 3 times a week on top of your daily movement the benefits will show.
It doesn't have to be punishing, you don't have to be drenched in sweat, you don't have to feel like you have taken part in an SAS training camp. Movement can be gentle and a gentler way of moving is actually better for you at times. Listening to your body, working with your body and understanding what works for you will help.
If you are a newbie start slow. Some gentle movement will ease you into being able to last longer and do more.
You don't need to go to the gym, you don't need tons of gym equipment at home. You can just use your own body weight or you can have simple items on hand that can be put away after you have used them.
